On other operating systems, such as the GNU/HURD or FreeBSD, only a very restrictive set of file system features may be supported in their implementations of ext2.
Which makes sense, imagine mount scanning every single file to check if it is a disk image formatted to ext4 with specific label, that would take forever :) You either need to mount it using the file name mount VHD.img /engr or create a loop device sudo losetup -f VHD.img and mount then you can mount the /dev/loop0 device using label.
ADDED: There are other things beyond mount options than can make a difference. Switching from ext3 to ext4 is itself often a visible improvement. Here are a few more tips for laptop users. If you have a slow SSD, check out this thread at SU.

Interesting that ZFS on Linux is used by LLL, wasn't aware of that. I'd go with a FreeBSD system running ZFS or OpenSolaris/Solaris before using ZFS on Linux, but that's me personally.
Finally, the ext4 + increase50 test made me think that this behavior is a feature (or bug) of the in-memory free block management. Maybe ext4 can't reuse free blocks as long as it doesn't hit the size of the underlying disk or until you unmount and remount the filesystem. Last but not least I installed FreeBSD and played with UFS2: Sep 07, 2007 · By Gary Sims Linux divides its physical RAM (random access memory) into chucks of memory called pages.
